Kid's Book About Dilated Eye Exams

June 12, 2025 - I wrote a short children's book to explain the importance of knowing your eyes, the process of a doctor looking in the back of your eyes, and understanding what it means if you have a freckle in your eye.
The goal of this book is to be published and distributed to every Optometrist Office that requests one, to be place in their lobby for young children to read, understand, and grasp the basic importance of dilated eye exams.
If anyone wants to collborate to publish, distribute, or create the characters and illustrations, I welcome your interest and involvement. Collaboration is the key to Ocular Cancer Awareness.

Freckle in the Back: The Adventures of Iris & Pupil!
By OcularCancer.com, for kids who love their peepers!

🌈 Welcome to the Land of Lookyville!
This is where all eyeballs live! Round, bright, and curious - just like YOU!
Meet Iris, a colorful, confident eye.
And her best friend Pupil, the black circle in the middle that helps her see light and dark.
👁️👁️ “Hey there!” says Iris.
“We’re your eyeballs! And we’ve got something important to tell you!”

One sunny morning, Iris felt a little… tickle in the back of her eye.
“What was that?” she blinked.
“Hmm,” said Pupil, peeking around.
“It might be a freckle! Not the kind on your nose -
but one way back here, where only special doctors can see.”
Page 3:
“What’s a freckle doing way back there?” Iris asked.
“Well,” said Pupil, “Sometimes eyes get freckles called choroidal nevi.
Most are totally friendly - just hanging out and doing nothing.”
🧡 “But sometimes - VERY rarely -
they can grow up to be something called ocular melanoma, a type of eye cancer.”
“Whoa!” Iris blinked. “That sounds serious!”
Page 4:
👨⚕️ “But don’t worry!” said Pupil.
“That’s why we go to the Eye Doctor for a dilated eye exam!”
“They use special drops to make us BIG and WIDE so they can peek all the way to the back!”
“Like a flashlight in a cave!” Iris giggled.

At the doctor’s office, Iris was a bit nervous.
But the eye doctor smiled and said,
“Just a little drop, and then we’ll take a look.”
With her pupil wide open, the doctor found…
🌟 “A teeny-tiny freckle!”
Page 6:
“It’s small, and it’s behaving,” said the doctor.
“But we’ll keep an eye on it - just in case.”
Pupil puffed up with pride.
“We’ll get pictures every year, and if anything changes, we’ll catch it early!”
🕶️ Iris got a pair of cool sunglasses for after the exam.
“My future’s so bright,” she joked, “I need shades!”

🎉 Iris and Pupil were back in Lookyville, feeling happy and safe.
“Getting a dilated eye exam was easy,” said Iris.
“And now we know we’re being taken care of!”
“And if YOU ever hear about a freckle in your eye,” said Pupil,
“don’t panic - just visit your eye doctor once a year, and you’ll be just fine.”
